One of the first records I ever possessed was not Toto Coelo's I Eat Cannibal,
nor Joe Dolce's Shaddap You Face.
It was not even Renee Renato's Save Your Love.
(Though as you can probably surmise, all these did at one point grace my record player.) It was this:
"Mahna Mahna," which although released in 1971, three years before I was born, somehow found its way into my nascent 7" vinyl collection, and re-emerged in the collective consciousness of a group of high schoolers during the late 1980s. Because, the Muppets are the coolest ever.
Perhaps it was inevitable that in our musically-inclined, slightly-OCD family, snippets of "Mahna Mahna" would eventually be sung within earshot of Theron, who of course had to know EVERYTHING about the song.
Did you know that it was the very first skit of the very first episode of The Muppet Show ever, in 1971? (Pay special attention to the telephone at the end if you would.)
And that it was actually based on a 1968 song by Piero Umiliani, composed for an Italian documentary about life in Sweden, titled Svezia, Inferno e Paradiso (Sweden, Heaven and Hell). (Cue strange shots of lots of Swedish ladies in a sauna.)
And did you know that Sandra Bullock did a version with Kermit in 1996? (Not that it matters to her personally, but my opinion of her increased tenfold upon watching this. Her comedic timing is impeccable.)
And the funniest thing is the 4.5 year old who laughs so hard he can hardly sing the song. (Note impersonation of Kermit and telephone at the end.)
